Many people suffered from being burned all over their bodies, caused by the fires and the waves of heat. The pain was so great that they grabbed horseweed and wormwood from the side of the road and rubbed it on their burned arms, legs and all over their bodies. It seemed to give them temporary relief. They looked as if they had found a tiny amount of peace for a moment.
