己斐の町を火の手から守ってくれたのは、間違いなく山手川だ。
この川が、延焼を防いでくれていた。夏になるとこの川で泳ぎ、
魚釣り、そして絵をよく描きに行っていた。
その川は、今や死体で埋め尽くされている。
浅瀬には、母と子が覆い重なるように、川に浮かんで死んでいる。
I believe it was the Yamate River that separated the town of Koi from the conflagration. The river saved our town from the fire. We used to have swimming lessons in the river during the summer. I used to fish and draw alongside of the river quite often.
Now the river is filled with dead bodies. More and more dead bodies are floating down the river. Along the shallow shore a mother and a child are dead, their bodies floating on the water. The mother seemed to cover her child as if to protect her child from the raging fire.
